Narragansett Heritage Turkey
The Narragansett Turkey is a heritage breed known for its striking plumage and excellent meat quality. Originating in the northeastern United States, this turkey is prized for its flavor, tenderness, and ability to thrive in free-range environments.
Key Features:
Appearance: The Narragansett turkey has a beautiful, slate-gray and white plumage with a distinctive, speckled pattern. Males (toms) are larger, with broad chests and a regal appearance, while females (hens) are smaller but equally attractive. The breed also has a red, fleshy snood (the fleshy protuberance on the beak) and wattles under the chin.
Size: Narragansett turkeys are medium to large in size, with toms typically weighing around 18-25 lbs and hens about 10-12 lbs. Their well-muscled bodies and strong legs make them ideal for meat production.
Meat Production: This breed is highly valued for its flavorful, tender meat. The meat is known for its rich taste and juicy texture, often preferred for roasting and holiday meals. Narragansetts mature more slowly than commercial turkeys, resulting in superior meat quality.
Temperament: Narragansett turkeys are generally calm and friendly. They tend to be more docile than some other turkey breeds and are often easier to handle. They are social birds and do well in free-range environments, where they can forage and roam.
Hardiness: The Narragansett is a hardy breed that adapts well to a range of climates. They thrive in free-range environments and can handle both hot and cold weather with proper shelter. They are known for being more disease-resistant compared to some commercial turkey breeds.
Summary:
The Narragansett Turkey is a heritage breed known for its attractive plumage and excellent, flavorful meat. Calm and hardy, they are perfect for free-range farming and offer superior meat quality due to their slow growth and natural upbringing. This breed is a great choice for those seeking a traditional turkey with rich, tender meat for special occasions.
